Long time no post! Last week was finals week so I took a little time off to study and hopefully it paid off! Anyway, now that I have a lot more free time I am hoping to get back on my posting schedule. I wanted to start it off with one of my favorite posts to read and write, all of the products that I finished last month!

As always I have tried to link to a website where you can shop these products and it is where I get my price information from. Also, to the best of my knowledge, I have included which products are not cruelty-free (not CF) or I couldn't find clear information on. I still have a goal of using up $1000 worth of makeup in 2018 so I updated my total at the end of this post. Now let's get into the products that I used up recently!

Groovi Beauty Candied Plum makeup wipes (may not be CF) | $3.00
I usually prefer micellar water to makeup wipes, but I've had these for ages and wanted to use them up so I made an effort to use them! The scent was a little strong for me and they didn't remove my makeup very well, though that might be because they were old. Would not repurchase.

Biore Pore Strips 14 pack (not CF) | $7.52
There's something so satisfying about pore strips, isn't there? I don't find them as effective now that my skincare routine is better but I used to love using these every few weeks! I would like to find a cruelty-free alternative!

Bath and Body Works Good Vibes Only bath fizzy | $6.95
I got this for Christmas and can't find the scent listed anywhere, but I didn't really like this bath bomb. The scent wasn't very strong and it didn't transform the color of the water at all. Would not repurchase.

Crabtree & Evelyn London Revitalizing Seaweed Travel Conditioner (may not be CF) | $2.99
I bought this as my conditioner for my trip to Mexico and used it up just after I got back. It was another product I wasn't very impressed with. My hair really needed some hydration while I was constantly swimming in the pool and the ocean but this conditioner just didn't provide enough. If you want a really light conditioner you may like this but my dry hair needed more! I've switched to a different conditoner in my collection and would not repurchase this one if I found it again at TJ Maxx.

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion sponge | $5.99
This is my favorite beauty sponge! I'm happy to repurchase it and I just found a great deal on a pack of these sponges. However, I have noticed that not every RT sponge performs the same. Some rip really quickly and others last for months. Hopefully the big set that I found has some of the better sponges!

Pureology Strength Cure travel conditioner | $3.99
I bought this thinking that it was a travel shampoo, but I accidentally grabbed the wrong bottle. I needed an extra conditioner in Mexico so I was glad that I bought it. It was more hydrating than the Crabtree & Evelyn one, but still not my favorite conditioner. I would rather purchase something from Briogeo or Living Proof.

Hey Honey Uncover Detoxifying Mud Mask 15 ml sample | estimated $15.88
This sample was from an Ipsy bag and I finally got around to using it. It was a very light mask, you really had to build it up for it to look like a traditional mud mask, and it smelled like lavender. It wasn't drying like most mud masks are on my skin so I did enjoy it!

Skyn Iceland Glacial Face Wash 30 ml sample | estimated $4.20 (from a set)
I took this cleanser with me to Mexico and I really liked it! It's not quite a cream and not quite a gel, but it is pretty gentle on the skin and was neither drying or hydrating. I would consider getting the full size when I'm done with all of the other cleansers in my collection.

Ciate Wonderwand Mascara sample | estimated $8.11
If you like hourglass-shaped mascaras like the Better Than Sex mascara or the Lash Paradise you may want to check this out! It's very lengthening but the formula is more dry than the similar products from Too Faced and L'Oreal. I personally liked it, but it may be too dry/not deposit enough product onto the lashes for some people.

Pur Fully Charged mascara sample | $15.00
I thought this was an okay, average mascara. I didn't notice any special "magnetic" properties that this mascara claimed to have. I wouldn't purchase a full size of it because a lot of drugstore mascaras do the exact same thing.

Skittles lip balm (maybe from Lip Smackers?) (maybe not CF) | estimated $1.00
Did anyone else use nothing but scented lip balms from Lip Smackers when they were younger? I found this in a drawer somewhere and loved the scent so much that I decided to keep using it! It wasn't the most hydrating lip balm, but it was mouthwatering.

Herbal Essences Hello Hydration shampoo (not CF) | $2.99
I have this horrible problem of half-using hair products and then shoving them in a drawer somewhere so I can start using something new. I decided to dig this out and finish it up so that it's not taking up space in my drawers! I didn't find it very hydrating but it smelled lovely and cleaned my hair well.

Member's Mark Mango Coconut body wash (maybe not CF) | estimated $3.00
My family bought a 3-pack of these body washes at Sam's Club and gave me one randomly. It smelled really nice and tropical and lasted ages! It also foamed nicely. I have a ton of body washes to get through but I would consider repurchasing this if I could get a definitive answer about the company being cruelty-free.

This month's total: $80.62
Previous total: $305.44
New total: $386.06

I still have to push myself to finish more products (or more expensive products) in my collection so that I can hit my $1000 goal by the end of the year!

Have you finished any makeup, skincare, or haircare recently?

What a busy month it has been! The year started off slow but now the months are flying by. As always, I have several products, movies, TV shows and books that I have been loving over the past month!

Nabla Dreamy Palette (review)
Purple shades are some of my favorite colors for the eyes, so I've loved reaching for this since I bought it last month! The metallic shades in here are absolutely gorgeous and there is a good variety of looks I can get from this palette. Definitely worth the splurge!

Purlisse BB Cream
This is the only base product I took with me to Mexico and I've been using it a lot even when I returned. It has great coverage for a BB cream and the shade matches me perfectly. I only wish there was a better shade range!

Buxom Full-on Lip Creams
Lip gloss is back, everybody! My liquid lipsticks have been pushed to the back of my lipstick drawer in favor of lip glosses, and these plumping glosses from Buxom have been my favorite lately. I have two of the most popular shades, White Russian and Dolly, and I love them both. White Russian is a pale pink and Dolly is a slightly shimmery mauve. I've been wearing them a lot alone and on top of other lipsticks. The plumping effect is not strong or painful but it feels like a nice, cooling tingling sensation.

From left to right: White Russian, Dolly

Get Out
We were writing screenplays in one of my classes at university so we decided to read the screenplay for Get Out, which has won a lot of awards. I loved the screenplay and immediately wanted to watch the movie, which is so good! It's kind of a horror/thriller/comedy about a black man named Chris who goes to meet his white girlfriend's strange parents.

A Series of Unfortunate Events
I haven't finished the second season of A Series of Unfortunate Events yet, but I love the second season so far! This is a really well-made Netflix series about three orphans who must constantly escape from an evil man that is trying to steal their fortune. I've been reading the books as well but I might actually prefer the show! I love how it goes more in detail about the secret organization and Neil Patrick Harris is really funny. The young actors in it are so talented, too.

Out of Darkness
I read this for my Young Adult Literature class last month and I have some mixed feelings about it. It's a fantastic book and I was so invested in it, but it was also incredibly sad and disheartening. It's set in the 1900s in Texas and follows Naomi, a Mexican teenager, Wash, a black teenager, and Naomi's twin half-siblings Beto and Carrie. It follows the events before and after an elementary school explodes and is based on a real historical event. Definitely don't read it if you only like happy books, but it really was amazing!

I would love to hear what you've been loving this month!
I don't always write about it on my blog, but I am an avid reader! I have a to-be-read list a mile long but of course I'm still rereading some old favorites. Every few months I like to update what I'm reading here and share what my thoughts are on the books I've recently finished, picked up, or started!

A Conjuring of Light by V. E. Schwab
I have been hearing nothing but good things about a Darker Shade of Magic trilogy and I've been so impressed with the first two books! This is the third in the series and I think it's going to be amazing. This series is about a magician named Kell who has a rare ability: to travel to three of the four different London's in this world, Red London, White London, and Gray London. I love the characters in this series and how unique it is! The second book was even better than the first so I hope A Conjuring of Light can top the second.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
I just finished reading this one for a Young Adult Literature class that I'm in. I remember hating this book when I read it in high school, but I really liked it this time around. It's so sad how a lot of the issues that this book covers still haven't been resolved here in America. If you didn't know, this is an American classic about the daughter of a lawyer who is put in harm's way when her father takes the case of a black man accused of rape in the 1930's.

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
Unlike a lot of people my age, I never read these books when I was younger, but I did love the movie! Now that Netflix has made a TV series out of the series I wanted to finally read them. They're definitely for a younger audience, but I'm really enjoying them so far! I'm already on the ninth book "the Carnivorous Carnival" and I want to read that before I finish the second season of the Netflix series. This is an adolescent series about three orphans and an evil man who is attempting to steal the fortune they will inherit.

This is Where it Ends by Marieke Nijkamp
I picked this up on a whim last year but I've been hesitant to read it because the issue that it covers is already constantly on my mind. It's about a school shooting but I don't know much more than that. I hope that it does the topic justice, I've been avoiding reviews of it so that I am unbiased when I start it.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J. K. Rowling
For the past year I've been rereading one of my favorite series ever! I love the Harry Potter books but the fifth one, the Order of the Phoenix, has always been my least favorite. Hopefully this one doesn't take me too long because I can't wait to read the Half Blood Prince, which is my favorite Harry Potter book! Let me know if you've read this series and if yes, what your favorite book is!

Also if you'd like to be updated on any of these books I will likely post a review on my Goodreads page where you can add me as a friend!

What are you reading at the moment? Do you recommend it?
It has been four months since I started this Project Pan so I figured it was time for an update! You can see the intro to this project here and my first update here if you would like to get caught up. This update I have made great progress and I have finished 6 products!

At the end of this post I'll write about the products I'm adding into this Project Pan. I also have a goal this year of finishing up $200 worth of product this year so I will update how that is going, too!
1. L'Oreal Pro Glow Foundation (not CF) | $11.99
FINISHED. I didn't think this would last me so long! I really loved this foundation and I'm sad that I won't be able to repurchase it because L'Oreal isn't cruelty-free.
2. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer (not CF) | $8.99
I've made more progress this update than I did in the last (marked by nail polish lines) but I don't know if I will be able to finish it this year. I like this concealer but it isn't my favorite and I don't like using it every single day.
3. Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder (not CF) | $3.99

4. Anastasia Fawn Contour Powder | $14.00
I'm trying to focus my use on one side of the pan, but I haven't noticed any progress on this contour powder. I only use a small amount so even though I use it often it will take me a long time to hit pan.
5. theBalm Bahama Mama Bronzer sample | estimated $1.60
Finally I feel like I'm getting through this little sample! It's so difficult to get my brush in this product, otherwise I think I would have finished it already. I wish I had an empty pan to repress it into.
8. Makeup Revolution Fortune Favors the Brave Palette | $18.00
I hit pan on my first ever eyeshadow! I'm so excited with the progress I've made on this palette. My goal is to hit pan on five shades and I've hit pan on two of them, the cream shade at the bottom and the taupe shade on the top left. I'm starting to focus on other shades in the palette so I now have a good dip in the warmer transition shade and the top left highlighting shade.
10. Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Eyeliner (not CF) | $5.89

11. MAC Lipstick in Hue (not CF) | $17.50
This is kept in my purse and I don't reach for it often, but when I do I have to reapply it a lot throughout the day because it is such a balmy formula. I've realized that I don't like this lipstick, the color or the formula. Hue is too peachy and the Glaze formula clings to any dry patches or lines on my lips. I will still try to use it but I've taken to pairing it with a lip gloss rather than wearing it on its own.
I thought I had a long way to go with this gloss, but I must have squeezed out an air bubble or something because I'm close to finishing this. I've been keeping it in my purse and pairing it with MAC Hue.

14. Bodycology Coconut Lime Body Lotion (not CF) | estimated at $5.00
FINISHED. By putting this in my Project Pan I've started moisturizing my body daily, so I'm glad I included a body lotion! I enjoyed this scent for a while but I was getting sick of it by the time I finished it. I had this for a very long time so I'm glad I got my use out of it.

16. Elf Makeup Mist and Set | $2.99
I never used a setting spray regularly before this Project Pan, but now I really like how this product sort of melts my makeup together. It doesn't make my makeup last any longer, but it makes it looks less powdery which I like. Sorry it's a bit hard to see where the product is currently at, I should have marked it for this update before taking the photo!

FINISHED. I was nearly drenching myself in this towards the end of this update because I really wanted to finish it! I didn't like the scent very much, I can't describe it but it just smelled...chemically. I couldn't tell you a single note in it, and it wasn't sweet, floral, fruity, musky, etc. Definitely one you would want to smell for yourself before buying it!

18. Bath and Body Works Twisted Peppermint Hand Sanitizer | estimated at $1.20
FINISHED. I keep a hand sanitizer in my purse and I've used up one every update so far!

This is a rolling Project Pan, so because I finished some products this month I'm going to add in some new ones.

New Add-ins:

1. Nyx Angel Veil Primer | $15.99
This is another base product to replace the L'Oreal Pro Glow foundation! I love this primer but it is the oldest one in my collection, so I want to try to finish it up.

2. Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal (travel sized) | worth $10.00
I love Becca highlighters, but a full-size one is too big of a product for me to try to finish off! I got this little travel-size one in a set a few years ago so I will try to finish this one instead.

3. Purespa Lavender Body Lotion | estimated $5.00
I haven't been using this product for long but I can already tell it is going to be a struggle. It doesn't absorb very quickly and I hate the strong lavender scent. I'm going to try my best but there is a lot of product left!

4. Origins GinZing moisturizer (not CF) | $28.50
I used to love this moisturizer but I have come to realize that it isn't hydrating enough for my dry skin. However, it is an expensive product and I'd like to get some use out of it.

5. Heidi Klum Shine Perfume (maybe not CF) | $12.29
I have a perfume graveyard situation going on where I have a ton of perfumes and they are all getting older. This is one of the oldest and it's only a 15 ml bottle so I'm hoping to finish it quickly and move on to the other perfumes in my collection!

6. April Irresistible Apple Hand Sanitizer | estimated $1.00
I've finished two hand sanitizers in this project already so I might as well start another one! I like keeping these in my purse. I work retail so my hands touch a lot of money, clothes, and equipment.

And that is all the progress and updates with my 2018 Project Pan so far!

Previous total: $9.19
Value finished this month: $59.66
New total: $68.85

Let me know if you're trying to finish up any makeup, skincare, or haircare this year and how you're doing so far!
As the title says, I recently spent a week on vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico with some friends and family! It was an amazing trip and it was my first time going out of the country other than little trips across the Canadian border. We went on lots of activities and I want to share what I would recommend to anyone who wants to go to Puerto Vallarta! My aunt and (new) uncle also got married while we were in Mexico so my family has a lot of great memories from this trip.
The Flight
I am not an experienced flier, but luckily the friends and family I traveled with knew what they were doing! We drove from our town to Flint, Michigan, and flew to Chicago early in the morning. Flint to Chicago was about a one hour flight. From Chicago, we went directly to Puerto Vallarta, which was around five hours! Puerto Vallarta was two hours behind our usual time in Michigan, so we arrived in the early afternoon with a lot of time to explore, get settled, and hit the beach.

On the way back we encountered some problems, however. Our connecting flight from Chicago to Flint was pushed back for hours with a risk of cancellation. It was an issue with the plane itself, not with the weather. Luckily we made it back that night, though it was very late when we landed in Flint and someone in our party had their luggage lost. We flew with United in case you were wondering!

The Resort
We stayed at the Marival Resort which is in Nuevo Vallarta, the newer part of Puerto Vallarta. It was about a thirty minute taxi ride from the airport (the traffic was crazy) and it was near the University and several other resorts. I was blown away by how nice it was! There were a lot of restaurants and bars to choose from, several different pools, it was on the ocean, and I loved my room. I shared it with my best friend and we freaked out over our balcony when we first saw it!

The staff was so nice and they spoke much better English than I did Spanish. I'm still craving margaritas from the bars! The resort offered a lot of different activities each week, like a live mariachi band, fire dancing, free boogie boards, and more.

Octopus

The Food
Like I said, the Marival resort had a lot of different restaurants and I think we ate at all of them at least once. I'm not a big fan of Mexican food in general, so I was worried about what I would eat, but I had some great fish, steak, pasta, etc. I loved the Italian place! Breakfast was great, as well. We ate out in the town of Puerto Vallarta once. We stumbled across a little place right on the beach and I had octopus...which I was iffy about, but it wasn't bad. The drinks were amazing, too, especially the margaritas!

The Town
We went into the town of Puerto Vallarta several times and it was so beautiful. The traffic was insane, especially in the cobbled streets of old Vallarta. Being a part of a big group, we felt very safe in the town and we did a lot of shopping.

I speak pretty good Spanish, at least enough to have a (stunted) conversation, but I didn't need to use it most of the time. The town had a lot of tourist shops, beautiful architecture, flowers, and a great view of the ocean and the mountains.

I definitely recommend taking a day to explore if you go there! The poverty was very sad to see, however, especially if you venture up into the mountains.

Puerto Vallarta from the Catamaran

Snorkeling and the Catamaran
I went on a long snorkeling excursion with Vallarta Adventures to Las Marietas islands. It was a long, sometimes chilly boat ride, but the staff were great and really entertaining! We didn't see as much wildlife as I had expected by the islands were beautiful and there were some pretty fish. Then we were taken to a private beach for beach volleyball, boat rides, and paddle boarding.

On a different night, my aunt and uncle rented a Catamaran whale-watching ride. We sadly didn't see any whales, but the sunset was beautiful and I loved seeing the town from the boat. It was also the perfect light for photographs! My aunt and uncle got married the next day so we treated the Catamaran as an engagement party.

Surfing, Body Boarding and Parasailing
Our resort was right on the ocean so we had a variety of water activities to do. I love the ocean so much so I was excited to try surfing again! The waves weren't the best for surfing, but I stood up a couple of times. I definitely recommend Body Boarding or Parasailing in Puerto Vallarta more than I recommend surfing. Parasailing was surprisingly relaxing and I'm excited to try body boarding on some of the big waves that we get on Lake Superior!

Zip Lining
On our last full day in Mexico I went with a big group of girls to the mountains for zip lining! I've been zip lining before in Michigan but the view was just stunning. It was a lot of fun and we also got dipped in the river at the end! Then we went back to where we started on mules. The mules were so cute but sadly I think I'm allergic.

I can't decide if zip lining or snorkeling was my favorite activity, but I definitely recommend going to Puerto Vallarta if you're thinking of a Mexican vacation! It was beautiful and safe and there were so many things to do if you're not the kind of person who wants to sit and tan all day on vacation.

What city is your favorite place to travel to? I did love Puerto Vallarta (and I'd go back in a heartbeat) but I'm a Michigan girl so I'll say Detroit!

It has been a hot minute since I last posted an Anti haul! These are some of my favorite posts to do, and since beauty brands continue to release things I don't want/understand, I figured it was time to do another one.

If you're not sure what an Anti haul it, it is a list of what products you don't want to buy. Basically the opposite of a wish list. And as always, if I list something that you want to buy or that you love, we probably just have different tastes, which is great! Each makeup lover wants different things from their collection. So with that disclaimer, let's drag some makeup.

Halo Beauty XO's
I've been a big fan of Tati (GlamLifeGuru) on YouTube for years, and was really excited for her to launch a beauty line, but sadly I will not be buying her first product. The reviews don't seem bad so far but I refuse to spend $40 a month on vitamins. Vitamins. I'm pretty happy with my skin and nails at the moment, so I see no need for these. I hope Tati brings out some actually makeup or skincare next, because I'm still interested in her line!

Tarte Be a Mermaid and Make Waves Palette
When I first saw this palette on Instagram I was drawn to it; although I am getting very sick of the unicorn and mermaid trend within the beauty community, I must admit that I love ocean-inspired makeup. The scales and packaging really appealed to me. However, I don't wear very warm-toned colors or blues, so this palette isn't for me. Also, has anyone else noticed that these colors are all that it being released lately? A mostly warm palette with a few pops of blues--already have it somewhere in my collection.

Anastasia Amrezy Highlighter
This is another product that I originally thought about buying, but the color really isn't very unique. It is also massive, I will never get enough use out of something this big. I love the packaging and the color is pretty, but I will stick with the highlighters already in my collection. PS. If you already have the Mary Lou Manizer, you may not need this either!

Fenty Beauty Body Lava
For $60 I could buy a new Becca highlighter, smash it up and bath myself in it, and still have money left over to buy something else. I love Rihanna and the products I've tried from Fenty so far, but I refuse to pay that much money for something I would only use on special occasions. Which reminds me, why do so many makeup brands release products specifically for music festivals? Do that many people attend Coachella? Do that many people want to buy makeup that they will likely only wear once?
Shimmery Finishing Spray (Ciate Dewy Spritz, Tarte Mermist, etc.)
This is another product that every brand seems to be coming out with lately--shimmering setting sprays. Who wants this? Who wants glitter or shimmer everywhere? I love a nice highlight, but shimmer all over the face is not for me. I could see people using this on their body, however, if that appeals to you!
Sleek Copper Plate Highlighting Palette
These Sleek palettes were really popular about a year ago and now they have released a new set of shades. I had the Cleopatra's Kiss highlighting palette for a while (review here) and I eventually decluttered it. I found the powders really scratchy and the creams really oily. It just took up room in my collection, and if they didn't change the formula I think the Copper Plate one would do the exact same thing.

I would love to hear if you're interested in any of these products and why! Do you agree with me on anything?

Watching new makeup releases lately, as someone who doesn't love warm-toned eyeshadows, has been a giant snooze-fest. Every single makeup brand lately has been releasing nothing but reds, oranges, and yellows. I wasn't excited about any eyeshadow palettes until I saw this absolute beauty from Nabla Cosmetics, and the swatches looked even better!

Everything from the packaging to the gorgeous shades included in this palette drew me in. Sadly, by the time I was able to purchase it, it was sold out. But I was first in line when it came back and I have been testing it out for several weeks.

To start: the packaging. THE PACKAGING. I have been obsessed with star and constellations designs for months now and this one is just stunning. I adore it. The palette is a decent size, roughly the size of the Tartelette palettes, with 12 shades in a variety of finishes. The color scheme is not too bold, but it has a lot of beautiful purples and raspberry shades that I don't see often in other palettes.

The matte shades in this palette are really soft and easy to blend. I like that there are multiple shades that I can use as a transition shade, such as Lullaby, Illusion, and Sistina, depending on what color eye look I want. There are also two darker mattes, Senorita and Dogma, that are great in the crease or to darken a look. However, you do have to be careful with them because they can be a little bit patchy! The shimmer shades are very metallic and beautiful on the eye, but I prefer to use them with my fingers to avoid fallout. There is one glittery shade, Delirium, which is the only shade in the palette that I don't like. I would have preferred a dark matte purple or a matte cream.

Swatches from left to right: Immaculate, Illusion, Vanitas, Delirium, Byzantine, Sistina, Metal Cupid, Inception, Senorita, Rose Gold, Lullaby, Dogma.

Byzantine, Lullaby, Metal Cupid, and Inception are my favorite shades in the palette as they are quite unique and perform really well. I doubt I will reach much for Delirium and Vanitas because I don't like peachy shades or glitter.

The shadows all swatch beautifully! I get so much inspiration from this palette, I have a feeling it is going to be one of my favorites. It is on the pricier end, but I don't think you would be disappointed in this palette so long as you would use the colors. I will definitely be watching for more Nabla releases in the future.

What do you think of this palette?
Who doesn't want a white, bright smile? I have tried a number of teeth whitening methods in the past and have never been happy with the results.

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Smile Brilliant contacted me a few months ago and asked if I would be interested in testing their teeth whitening kit, which I readily agreed to. I had never tried an intense method of teeth whitening, only things like whitening toothpaste, baking soda, and Crest Whitestrips. I was eager to see if a more tailored product would give me results!

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
The package arrived within a few days and included everything I would need for the process, such as detailed instructions, a pre-paid envelope, whitening and desensitizing gel, and products to make upper and lower teeth impressions.

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Following the instructions carefully, I mixed the blue base paste and the white catalyst paste together. Both of these products felt like very soft Play-Doh and I mixed them until they were a uniform light blue color. Then I shaped the paste into one of the teeth trays and pressed my top teeth into it. The instructions showed photos of good and bad impressions and gave advice on how to get the best possible ones. I repeated this process for my bottom teeth and let the impressions dry.

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
I suggest taking photos of the impressions and sending them to Smile Brilliant! A member of their team will let you know if the impressions are clear enough to make impressions from. The kit included an extra set of base and catalyst paste, so if you mess up on either your top or lower impressions you can redo them.

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
I sent in my first impressions using the pre-paid envelope and a few days later was informed that they weren't clear enough to make the custom fitted whitening trays, so I was sent more products free of charge to redo the impressions. The second time I got it right and my individualized teeth trays were made! They were sent to me so that I could get started on the whitening.

My teeth whitening trays with the whitening gel in it

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Throughout the process of whitening I was given a lot of tips and advice on how best to use the Smile Brilliant products. Some people experience gum sensitivity, which can be reduced by coating the gums with coconut oil or Vaseline before whitening. Luckily I didn't experience a lot of sensitivity, but I think this is a great trick if your teeth or gums are more sensitive!

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Once I received my trays, it was pretty straightforward to begin the whitening process. The package I first received contained many syringes, some labeled "whitening gel" and others "desensitizing gel". To start whitening, you first brush your teeth gently with water to remove any plaque. Then you put a dot of the whitening gel into each teeth indentation in your whitening trays. It's advised to use about 1/4 to 1/3 of the product in the syringe with each session. Then you put the tray in and set a timer! You can leave the trays in for anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours, so I started with 45 minutes and gradually increased the time with each session.

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
When I first put in the trays I felt a slight discomfort if the whitening gel hit my gums, but it quickly went away and was never painful. I liked to pass the time by taking a shower, washing my makeup brushes, doing a mask, or doing homework. For me, the best time to whiten was about an hour after a meal, that way I wouldn't be hungry with the trays in. After the whitening gel is done, you apply the desensitizing gel to the trays and leave those in for 15 to 20 minutes.

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
In my experience I didn't have any pain or discomfort after each session. If I added too much whitening gel to the trays it could make my gums a little sensitive, but it wasn't bad at all, and again, there are ways to prevent or reduce that if you do experience it.

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
I've been whitening about four times per week, but it is best to do it every day and most people start to notice a difference between 7-14 sessions.

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
So how well did it work? I took before and after photos in the same spot in similar lighting so that I would be able to tell, and I notice a difference. The only difference between these photos is that in the top one I'm wearing makeup and have my hair down! I'm even wearing the same sweater.

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
In person, I think that the Smile Brilliant products definitely took care of any stains on my teeth. I'm not a big coffee drinker, but I do love soda and that had given my teeth a yellow tinge. I think that my teeth are now the whitest they can naturally be without bleaching and damaging the enamel! If you have more stains from coffee, grape juice, wine, etc. you would likely notice a bigger difference.

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
This isn't the cheapest method of teeth whitening but I do think it works well and quickly. If other products haven't removed stains for you, there is a good chance that a more personalized approach like the Smile Brilliant line would. They also have options for those with sensitive teeth, which is worth checking out!

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

Empties have become one of my favorite posts to write and read. Especially since setting a goal for myself, I love seeing how far I've come. Plus, I think finishing a product means that you really know how you feel about it so reviews of empties are always helpful!

These are all of the products that I finished in March and at the end of this post I will update my $1000 use-up goal!

Alba Botanica Hawaiian Shampoo Drink it Up Coconut Milk | $5.99
I bought this years ago at TJ Maxx because I loved the scent, but my hair didn't like it at all. It took so much product to get my hair feeling clean and then a day later it would be oily again, whereas usually I can go two days without shampooing. I finished this up by using it as a brush cleaner, which worked well.

Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo | $5.99
My former favorite dry shampoo from Batiste may or may not be cruelty-free, so I decided to play it safe and try out dry shampoos from brands that I know don't test on animals. This one was okay and I have repurchased it, but I do prefer the Batiste one. If you have any recommendations please let me know!

Biore Deep Pore Charcoal Cleanser (not CF) | $7.99
I've used this for years because it took off my makeup really well, but now that I've discovered micellar water I'm looking for a more gentle cleanser! I have a few samples to use up so I will finish those before looking for a new cleanser.

Bodycology Frosty Vanilla hand soap (not CF) | $4.97
Usually I don't include hand soaps in my empties posts, but I received this one as a gift so I consider it "my" product if that makes sense. I liked the scent a lot, it was a unique minty vanilla that was perfect for winter.

Covergirl Super Sizer mascara (not CF) | $6.99
Several people recommended this mascara to me and it didn't disappoint! I really liked it for lengthening and defining my lashes, but sadly I won't be repurchasing it and I'm still on the hunt for my perfect drugstore mascara.

Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara sample | $12.00
This is a really great mascara! Funnily enough, I've never purchased this mascara but it has come in so many Too Faced sets, subscription bags, and free gift with purchases that I've gone through at least five samples of it. I like it a lot but I don't see myself purchasing it in the future because I have a ton of mascaras to get through.

Elf Eye Makeup Remover Pen | $3.00
If you make small mistakes with mascara or winged eyeliner, I think this is a great product to fix small problems. It dries out pretty quickly but it helps me salvage my wings in a pinch. I will repurchase it soon! I've seen it at TJ Maxx for a small discount so I'll definitely check there first. Also, if you find that the tip is dirty, you can flip it over and get a few more uses out of it!

This is my all-time favorite lip balm! It smells like sunscreen and reminds me of the beach, I absolutely love it and have gone through four or five tubes. I'm definitely going to repurchase eventually but I would like to focus on some of the other lip balms in my collection first.

Tarte Maracuja Oil 7 ml sample | estimated $6.72
I received this in an Ipsy bag ages ago, I think in my very first bag back in 2016, so this little sample lasted me a long time! Granted, I didn't use it every day but I definitely could decide whether or not I liked it based on this sample. It was nice for moisturizing because it absorbed really quickly but I don't think that it's anything special. I prefer my moisturizer from the Ordinary.

ChapStick Duo Refill* | $2.99
Influenster sent this to me along with two other ChapStick Duos but this was my favorite out of the three flavors. I think that it's watermelon but there is nothing on the container to tell me which one it is! I wouldn't repurchase this but I think it's a fun concept and it's good for lightly hydrating the lips. They have a lot of flavors to choose from.

I also finished some products in my Project Pan but I will talk about those in my next update!

If you've been following my empties series in 2018 you will know that my goal is to finish up $1000 worth of product this year. In March I used up a grand total of $59.93. My previous total from January and February was $245.51, so now I am at $305.44! I think I'm doing pretty well but I want to step it up in the next few months.

Have you finished anything big this month?

Long time, no post--over the past week I was on an amazing vacation to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico! It was so incredible and I will definitely do a post on everything me and my family did there, but first I want to talk about the makeup I took with me.

I tried my best to bring small, compact products that would work well for a number of occasions, whether it was dinner, exploring, or laying on the beach. I brought everything I needed and more so I wanted to discuss what I brought and whether or not it was necessary.

Cover FX Primer sample
My skin tends to be oily in the heat, so I brought a more mattifying primer on vacation. I used this a few times when I was doing a full face of makeup and it worked well with the foundation I brought.

Purlisse BB Cream
I had a sample of this ages ago and absolutely loved it. I actually ordered a full size specifically for this trip because I really wanted to use it! It has pretty high coverage, SPF 30, and it matched me pretty well whether I was winter-pale or getting a slight tan.

Rimmel Stay Matte Powder (not CF)
I like to set my makeup with a pressed powder and this is the one I'm trying to finish in my Project Pan this year. The pan is very thin so I was worried about it breaking, but the powder is fine. The outer packaging, however, didn't make it.

RCMA No Color Powder
I did not need to pack this at all now that I'm looking back on my vacation! I have an "empty" Elf powder container that I've been pouring this RCMA powder into for months now and I had no idea how much powder had collected in the bottom of the container. I could've easily left the full container of RCMA powder at home and only taken the Elf container and had more than enough powder for the week.

Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define concealer
This is my new favorite concealer and I loved using it along with the Purlisse BB Cream. I do wish I would have brought another concealer because I got a bee sting on my cheek halfway through the trip and this one didn't quite cover it, but of course I had no idea that would happen.

Anastasia Fawn Contour Powder
I used this one whenever I got dressed up for dinner, but I could have done without it and just used a bronzer for contouring.

Physician's Formula Butter Bronzer
I wish I would have packed a slightly darker bronzer! I love this product but it works best for me when I'm at my palest. A few days under the Mexican sun and this was barely bronzing me.

Pacifica Blush sample
I packed two different blushes, one glowy and one matte, and I used this glowier one a lot less. My foundation was dewy enough!

Swatches from left to right: Fawn, Butter Bronzer, Paaarty, Pacifica blush, Opal

Tarte Paaarty Blush sample
I got a lot more use out of this matte, nude pink blush. It worked for every occasion and I was really glad I packed it.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Travel Sized in Opal
I was hesitant about packing this highlighter--everyone knows Becca's formula is soft and prone to shattering, and I had already repressed this one once, but luckily it survived the journey and I used it a lot.

Urban Decay Naked Basics palette
An oldie but a goodie, I used this quite a bit. Often I just went for a basic matte eye but when I was feeling more into shimmer I added the next product.

Nars Dual Intensity eyeshadow in Himalia (not CF)
This is one of my favorite single shadows and it pairs really well with the Naked Basics palette!

Nyx Epic Ink Liner
I attempted to use this once for winged liner and then promptly gave up when it didn't work out. I didn't have time to fuss around with liquid liner.

Covergirl Perfect Plus eyeliner (not CF)
I did end up using this simple black twist-up liner a lot, so I was glad I packed it.

Swatches from left to right: Venus, Foxy, W.O.S., Naked 2, Faint (Naked Basics), Himalia, Gloss Bomb, Velvet Teddy

Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara sample
I love this mascara and I was happy that I brought it, but I had such a tough time removing it at the end of the night! Usually my eye makeup remover rocks but somehow putting it in a travel container made it not work as well and every morning I woke up with raccoon eyes.

Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb
I've recently hopped on the lip gloss train so I wanted to bring one of my favorites on the trip. It smells delicious and felt amazing on my sunburned lips!

MAC Velvet Teddy (not CF)
One of my all-time favorite nudes, this paired well with a lot of my outfits. I packed a lot more lip products in a variety of colors but these were the only two I reached for, along with a good lip balm.

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!
I packed two sunscreens, an SPF 15 and an SPF 50 and I wish I would have packed a spray-on one as well! I got sunburned my first day in Mexico and after that I learned my lesson and drenched myself in lotion and sunscreen. I'm happy to say that my burn turned into a (slight) tan!

This is probably a lot more makeup than other people bring on vacation but I love getting dressed up for dinner so I think I brought just a few extra items!

What do you love to take traveling?

Ever since Beauty News first talked about these beautiful blushes I've had my eye on them, but I didn't want to purchase one for several reasons:

1. The $40 price tag.
2. I didn't think Chantecaille was cruelty-free, like most other luxury brands.
3. It was never in stock anywhere.
4. The $40 price tag!

However, I got a VISA gift card that would cover most of the cost, the blushes came into stock, and I did my research on Chantecaille's cruelty-free status, so when my birthday came around I decided to treat myself. (Let's all ignore the fact that I treated myself three different times for my birthday)

This blush line has several different shades, each with a different animal embedded in it, and I was torn between the bee, the coral, and the sea turtle. A portion of the profit would also go to benefit the animal that the blush represented. I decided on the coral because I liked the shade and I figured that by benefiting coral reefs, lots of other species are helped, too.

Chantecaille vs. Hourglass

When the blush first arrived, I must admit I was underwhelmed. The packaging was gorgeous and luxe, but I hadn't realized how little product you get. It's only 2.5 grams! An Hourglass blush, for comparison, is 4.2 grams and it is a similar price. An Essence Satin Touch blush is double the product and is only a few dollars. You really don't get your money's worth of product, even if the packaging and design is luxurious. The silver packaging is heavy and simple, but it feels expensive.

As for the formula, it's truly beautiful. It is the softest, silkiest blush I've ever used. And it blends so seamlessly into the skin! I was worried at first about how bright the shade is, but it seems like no matter how much I apply it can always be blended out if at first it is too pigmented. It lasts well, though is not the longest-lasting blush that I have tried.

In short, I think if you want the Chantecaille Philanthropy blush it won't be a waste of money. However, there are blushes at the same price point (and lower!) in which you get way more product and the formula is nearly as good. I highly recommend the Hourglass blushes, and Tarte blushes last for ages.

It does take me a very long time to use up a blush so even if I used this blush every day it would probably take a year to use up, so I personally am not too upset about the small size. Be aware of it if you are interested in this product! Other than the small size and high price, I don't see any cons to this gorgeous blush and I do recommend it. It kills me to see the gorgeous design fading, but blushes are meant to be used!

I don't think I will be picking up any more of these blushes (although the bee one is calling my name) but Chantecaille is definitely a brand I will be watching!

What do you think of this product?

My main goal this year is to put more focus on using up the makeup in my collection and buying less. Of course, this means that on my blog I'm posting more about my Project Pan, the items in my collection, and of course, empties! These are all of the products I finished this month and my thoughts on them now that they are done.

My goal this year with my empties is to use up $1,000 worth of product, not including the products I'm using in my Project Pan or what I'm decluttering. Last month I used $159.39 so I would love to top that this month!

Also, if I have a different price from what the website I linked listed, it's because I either remember getting a special deal on it or I still have the price tag on the product!

Assured Ultra Rich Shaving Cream (not CF) | $1.00
Usually I use a shower gel for shaving, but I struggle with razor burn so I thought I would try a shaving cream and see if that helped. I liked using this because it smelled like raspberries, but it didn't help my razor burn at all and I don't think it is cruelty-free so I wouldn't repurchase.

Soap and Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub | $15.00
If you haven't smelled this, you're missing out! It reminds me of summer and I love using it on my legs. It's not the harshest scrub that I've used, but it works well as a body scrub and like I said, I love the lemon-lime scent.

Dirty Works Micellar Cleansing Water | $4.99
Since I started using micellar water I've tried out a few different brands to see which one removes my makeup the best. The first one I tried was the best, but I hated the strong scent so I never repurchased it. This one didn't remove my makeup very well so I wouldn't repurchase it. Luckily I have fallen in love with the coconut micellar water from Pacifica, which has a light scent and removes my face makeup like a dream!

Mary Kay Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover (not CF) | $15.00
This is my favorite eye makeup remover and I use it almost every day. I have a lot of backups of it so luckily I don't have to find a cruelty-free alternative just yet. If you have any recommendations let me know!

True Blue Spa Shea Cashmere Hand Scrub | $19.84
I've had this scrub for years and I love the scent, but I always forgot to reach for it. I put it in my shower and started using it on my feet and hands. I like the scent a lot but I wouldn't repurchase it because I don't need it in my collection.

Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner 1 oz sample | estimated $2.25
I finished this up really quickly and I wasn't a big fan of it. It was a little bit too harsh for my skin, but if you have normal/oily skin it might work better for you!

Promise Organic Nourishing Coconut Milk Facial Lotion | estimated $3.82
I liked the formula of this but the coconut scent was waaaay to strong for my to use on my face, it gave me a headache. I only finished it by using it to moisturize my chest.

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge | $4.89
I've been really flying through these lately! I found a great new way to clean my beauty sponges (with bar soap rather than liquid soap) but the soap I used for this sponge was dry and cracked and made the sponge rip apart. I repurchased the sponge and I got a new bar soap to wash it with so I don't have that problem again!

L'Oreal Voluminous Curved Brush mascara (not CF) | $5.84
This was one of the last mascaras I purchased before going cruelty-free. I accidentally bought it in brown, not black, so although I liked the effect I saved it for days when I wanted low-key makeup. It was a good mascara, but I wouldn't repurchase it.

Essence Waterproof Eyeliner Pen | $2.99
This was an okay liner, good in a pinch and good for the price, but it wasn't fine or black enough for me to do wings with. If you just want a simple, affordable liner I would recommend this!

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream 0.25 fl.oz sample | estimated $10.50
I don't have a solid opinion of this BB cream because it was definitely too dark for me! I had to mix it with other products to make it work. It has a thicker texture and this shade had a strong yellow tone to it.
This was in my Project Pan this year and I love the scent! It's light and sweet, but unique and just a hint tropical. The monetary value of this one was added to my Project Pan update because I have a separate goal for that project!

Bath and Body Works Caribbean Escape Hand Sanitizer
I've been keeping this in my purse and using it a few times a day. Especially with the flu going around, you can't be too safe and I've somehow managed to not get sick so far this year!

Products I'm Decluttering:

LA Girl Pro Coverage HD Foundation | $8.99
I bought the lightest shade in this foundation and it's still too dark and warm for my skin! I have to use about equal amounts of white mixer to make it work, and I'm sick of it. I'd rather just declutter it and give it to someone who might get more use out of it.

Colourpop Super Shock Cheek in Holiday | $8.00
I didn't use this very often and I think it has dried up now. It's a cream product but it is nowhere near as soft and blendable as my Colourpop cream highlighter. The shade is too bright for me, anyway.

Mary Kay Blemish Control Toner | $15.00
I had this product for a while and I remember liking it, but I went to use it up after I finished the Mario Badescu sample and it stung my skin really badly every time I tried to use it! I can't tell if my skin has gotten more sensitive or if the product has gone off, but either way I'm not going to keep it in my collection.

Last month I was at $159.39 of my $1000 goal, and this month I finished $86.12 which brings my new total up to $245.51! I felt like I used up a lot of products in February, but a lot of them were smaller/less expensive than what I used in January. I'm still well on track for finishing my goal so hopefully this continues!

My other goal (which is proving less easy to stick to than I thought...) is to purchase less in beauty products that I am able to finish up and I've spent a little bit more than what I use up so far this year, so March will be a no-buy month for me!

What products have you finished recently?

This is an unpopular opinion, but February is one of my favorite months. For one, it's my birthday month! Some of my friends also have birthdays in February so I love going out and celebrating on the weekends. The weather also starts to get warmer, even if it's just a few degrees it feels like a big difference when you have to walk all across campus!

This month I have a lot of affordable makeup favorites as well as the usual TV/reading favorites!

Pixi x Aspyn Ovard Highlighter in London Lustre
So many highlighters that are suited for fair skin are a pale pink, so I love finding one that is a really light gold like this one! It feels weird to swatch, almost moussey like the Colourpop highlighters, but it picks up like a powder with a brush and it looks stunning as a highlight. If you like Moonstone from Becca I think you would love this shade!

Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define Concealer
I compared this to the Tarte Shape Tape concealer and for me, this one comes out on top! It blends into the skin beautifully, has good coverage, and looks natural on the skin but covers everything I want to cover.

Elf Makeup Mist and Set
Since adding this to my Project Pan I've gotten a lot more use of of this product and I've found a love for setting sprays! I don't usually have an issue with my makeup lasting all day, but I definitely struggle with a powdery, dry look after I finish setting my face. Setting spray helps take the powderiness away.

Elf Tinted Lip Oil in Pink Kiss
I picked this up on a whim because I'm loving lip gloss at the moment, and this formula is fantastic! If you hate sticky, heavy glosses you may want to try this out. It feels hydrating and gives a little color.

From left to right: Pink Kiss, London Lustre

Deadpool
I haven't seen a lot of superhero movies, but this R-rated one was so funny! I loved it. Ryan Reynolds was amazing and I like how it broke the fourth wall constantly. I understand why a lot of my old coworkers were raving about it now. It's about a man who wants to get revenge on the people who disfigured him and transformed him into an immortal superhero, but he isn't exactly the superhero type.

Big Little Lies
Another popular one, I'm finally joining the hype for this HBO series. I still have a few episodes to go, but I'm flying through it! It stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, and some other big names. It's hard to explain what it is about because I haven't reached the end of the series, but I think that someone gets murdered at a school party. I can't wait to read the book!

Expedition Unknown
Did anyone else know that there was a travel channel? I had no idea until I heard about this show and fell in love with it! I'm a big mystery/mythology/history nerd and a show like this is perfect for me. It follows Josh Gates, an archaeologist and presenter, as he explores ancient mysteries around the world such as what really happened to Amelia Earhart's plane, where the missing Amber Room is, and if there ever was a lost city of gold. I'm adding a lot of places to my travel list since starting to watch this show! Unfortunately, it's hard to find but it may still be on Netflix in some countries.

I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Sanchez
I'm taking a Young Adult Literature course this semester and as you can imagine, it involves a lot of reading. So far this story is my favorite. It's about a teenage girl named Julia who loses her sister and after her death she tries to uncover some of her sister's secrets. I really loved the main character, she was an unusual female protagonist. I rated this one 4/5 stars on Goodreads.

I would love to hear what your favorites are this month!

There's something so satisfying about seeing makeup being used up! Half of the YouTube videos I'm watching lately have been Project Pans and declutters, so I was looking forward to updating my own yearly Project Pan. This is a rolling project, which means that as I finish a product, I will add in another so that I always have 18 to work on.

I'm focusing on a lot of different areas in my makeup collection this year: makeup that isn't cruelty-free, makeup that is getting old, sample sizes, or a combination of the above. I want to use up makeup that I don't usually reach for and therefore wouldn't likely finish without including it in a project. My goal is also to use up $200 worth of products in my Project Pan throughout 2018! I've made some progress on almost everything and I have comparison photos so you can see where I was at in the beginning of January vs. now. On liquid products I used nail polish to mark where I started, and on stick products (lipstick, eyeliner) I marked the original length on a piece of paper.

1. L'Oreal Pro Glow Foundation (not CF) || $11.99
I can't believe I haven't finished this yet! I wear it at least three times a week and it was almost finished to begin with. I wish I could see how much was left in it, I don't think it will take me more than a month to finish. I've been enjoying using this product but sadly I won't be repurchasing it when it's gone. If you know of any similar foundations please let me know! I can't show progress on this one because of the packaging, but it's definitely getting low.

2. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer (not CF) || $8.99
Hopefully you can see the small amount of progress I made on this concealer...I thought I would be closer to finishing it by now. I'm definitely going to need to find new ways to use this if I want it to be gone by the end of the year! The navy nail polish line is where I started it at.
3. Rimmel Stay Matte Powder (not CF) || $3.99
I majorly expanded the amount of pan I have showing! I'm so happy with the progress. I've been using it every day and though it will take some time, I definitely think I will finish it this year.

4. Anastasia Fawn Contour Powder || $14.00
No progress on this yet, I'm trying to focus my use on one side of the pan but there is no dent yet. I may have to try using this as a bronzer, too. I'm not even going to bother including before/after because there's no visible progress.

5. theBalm Bahama Mama Bronzer sample || estimated worth $1.60
I simultaneously like and dislike this product. The formula is really nice, it's just so hard to use! I like to use a big powder brush to evenly disperse bronzer all over my face, but this sample it so small that it's hard to get a brush into it. I'm hoping to at least have hit pan on it next update.
7. Clinique Soft-Pressed Blush in Pink Blush (not CF) || $23.00
I have hit pan once again on the never ending blush of my nightmares...I love this shade, it's so easy to wear, but I've had it in my collection for ages and I'm ready for it to be gone! Since repressing it into half of the pan, I've used enough of it to hit pan again. Now I'm going to start focusing on the thicker part that is near the edge.

8. Makeup Revolution Fortune Favors the Brave Palette || $18.00
My goal is to hit pan on at least five shades in this palette, not including the peach shade that I destroyed about two weeks ago (I wanted to see how deep the pans were so I sacrificed a shade that I never use). I mostly use the cream shade at the bottom, the cool-toned transition shade at the top, the highlighting shades, and the deep brown crease shade, but I've also used some of the shimmery browns and coppers. It's not the best formula, but I love the shade variety in here. Not a lot of progress here, but you can see a dip in the transition shade second from the top-left.
11. MAC Hue lipstick (not CF) || $17.50
I don't think I'm going to finish this lipstick this year, but I am accomplishing my goal of using it more often. I keep it in my purse and use it underneath lip glosses and whenever I don't have another lip product.

12. Rimmel x Kate lipstick in 45 (not CF) || $5.49
This is the lipstick I've been focusing on, and I'm so pleased with how much I've managed to use! I wear this almost every day to cover up the foundation I always manage to get on my lips. The formula is creamy and nice, maybe I will actually finish a lipstick for once.

13. C.O. Bigelow Mint Lip Gloss || $7.50
I can't tell how much progress I've made on this product, but I don't think it's very much. I use it everyday while doing my makeup as a little extra hydration for my lips but the tube doesn't seem any emptier.

14. Bodycology Coconut Lime Body Lotion (not CF) || estimated at $5.00
I've been using this lotion on my feet and legs almost every day and as you can see I used up a lot of it! The dark blue nail polish mark is where I started in January and the grayish-purple line is where I'm at now. I'm estimated I will finish this in two or three months if I continue using it as much as I have.
FINISHED. This is the first product I'm considering finished in my Project Pan! There is a little bit of perfume left in the bottle, but the sprayer has stopped working and I'm calling it good.

16. Bath and Body Works Caribbean Escape hand sanitizer || estimated at $1.20
FINISHED. I kept this in my purse and used it after work and at school almost every day. I liked the scent a lot! It's very tropical and doesn't smell like hand sanitizer at all.
17. L'Oreal Pure Clay Exfoliate and Refine Mask (not CF) || $12.99
I've been using this once a week and I guess you could say I hit pan on it. I don't really find that this mask does much for my skin, but it does help exfoliate my nose which is nice. It's directed to be used 2-3 times per week so if I start doing that I will finish it faster and maybe notice more results!

18. Elf Makeup Mist and Set || $2.99
Before including this in my Project Pan, I didn't get a lot of use out of setting sprays but I'm really enjoying this one. It isn't as fine of a mist as other setting sprays in my collection, but I don't mind it. I find that it helps my makeup look less powdery and dry. I'm pretty happy with how much I used up! I started at the mint/light blue nail polish mark and now I'm at the dark purple/gray one.

The products I'm adding into this project are...

I got this for Christmas ages ago and I'm not a big fan of the scent, but I want to use it up. As you can see I did try to pan this last year but I didn't finish it. I'm going to try to layer this with other perfumes and see if there are any combinations that I like!

Bath and Body Works Twisted Peppermint Hand Sanitizer || estimate at $1.20
I have a ton of these mini hand sanitizers in my collection so I want to go through as many as I can this year! I enjoyed using the Caribbean Escape one a lot and I think I will like the Twisted Peppermint one even more, it has a fresher, cleaner scent. I'm about half-way through the bottle.

Amount finished: $9.19

Goal: $200.00

As you can see I have quite a ways to go, but it's only the first update and overall I'm happy with the amount of progress I'm making!
Are you doing a project pan this year? I would love to hear about it!

Does anyone else struggle with razor burn and shaving nicks the way that I do? I have been shaving my legs since I started swimming when I was ten years old and it feels like an issue I've had my entire life with a variety of razors, shaving creams, and body washes. The brand Remay recently contacted me and asked if I wanted to try out their Shave Gel Bar* and I figured, why not?

If, like me, you have never heard of a gel bar for shaving, let me introduce you to the concept: it's a solid shaving balm with a plastic handhold that glides across the skin and claims to be more protective, quick, and less messy than a traditional shaving cream or gel.

The Remay Shave Gel Bars have many claims including...

Reduces nicks, bumps, and razor burn
2-in-1 shaving gel and moisturizer
Safe for the legs, underarms, and bikini line
Time saver
Lasts for 30+ shaves
Mess-free
Paraben and Sulfate free, cruelty-free, vegan, and recyclable

You can see why I was so curious to try it out! As always, this is my true opinion. This is not a sponsored post, but I did receive this product in PR in exchange for an honest review! I have been using it for about two weeks, and I've been shaving my legs more often in those two weeks than I have in several months! No one sees my legs in the winter, so I usually don't bother with shaving, but of course to test out a shaving product I wanted to use it often.

Unused Gel Bar (top) vs. Gel Bar used 6 times (bottom)

So how does the Shave Gel Bar work? You simply wet your legs and then glide it across your skin and shave like usual. The texture of it is strange; it's not sticky or soap-y, oily or waxy. It's smooth but it doesn't feel heavy. It kind of feels like a very light lip balm. It leaves a subtle lather when it interacts with water. It doesn't have a noticeable scent and I like the packaging. It's user-friendly and great for traveling, I will be taking it to Mexico with me next month. It comes in a plastic case and all you have to do is take off the lid and the balm is exposed, ready for use. It doesn't melt in the shower and I can imagine it would last for around 30 uses! I have used it 6 times and there is a small dent in the product. Above you can see it in comparison to the brand-new bar that I haven't used yet.

Does this product really reduce nicks, bumps, and razor burn? For me, yes. It absolutely reduced them, though they didn't completely go away. Two weeks ago I had razor burn so badly that it stung to put on sweatpants! I wish I had taken a before photo, it was just awful. I was worried that more shaving would just irritate it more, but I haven't had razor burn since I started shaving with this product. I've had a few nicks, but less than usual, and most of them seem to be in the same places each time so I'm guessing my razor just reopened the cuts each time I shaved. As for its use in the bikini line, I haven't tested it, but I do like it for the legs and underarms!

I also like that there is no mess involved with this product. I always seem to miss a patch or two when I use a shaving cream because it covers the leg hairs when I use it, but this goes on completely clear. I don't think that it saves a massive amount of time in the shower, but even if it saves a minute each shave that can add up quickly. The above photo is me applying the product (left) and after I shaved a patch (right). I didn't have a lot of stubble to begin with because I just shaved on Sunday, but I figured I would show the product in use anyway! I used a Schick Quattro razor that has four blades. On a side note, I never realized my calves were so big? Since when?

Anyway, the only claim of this Shave Gel Bar that I don't agree with is it's 2-in-1 status. I have dry skin, especially in the winter, and I don't find the shaving bar to be moisturizing enough for me. It is no more drying than a usual soap or shaving cream is, so I still like to apply an in-shower moisturizer or a lotion after my shave. Every other aspect of it, though, I do enjoy. I can imagine myself repurchasing a double pack when my current two run out.

The Remay Shave Gel Bars come in packs of 2 and 4. If you shave twice a week, you can use one bar for about 3-4 months which I think is a good deal. Overall, I think that this is an innovative product and I'm really happy that I got to try it out, especially because swimsuit season is coming up!

I was offered a 20% code for my readers on the Remay website, which is Katie20! This is a code that I can make commission off of, so if you want to use it you are welcome to, but of course you don't have to.

If you've been on a beauty blog or YouTube in the past year or so, you've probably heard of one of the most popular concealers out there: the Tarte Shape Tape. It claims to have high coverage, multiple uses, and not settle into fine lines and creases. I've had this concealer for months and while I like it, it's not something that I want to spend more than $20 on.

So when I started hearing about an affordable dupe for the Shape Tape, I was really excited. I figured that even if this drugstore dupe wasn't exactly like the Shape Tape, maybe it could still become a staple in my collection.

The dupe that I'm referring to is the new Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define! Makeup Revolution was really popular in the UK, and has had similar success here in the US since it came to Ulta. This concealer has been going in and out of stock since it launched at Ulta, so I'm glad I got a hold of it while I could! I've been trying and comparing the Conceal and Define to the Shape Tape for about two weeks now and I can compare and contrast them.

Shape Tape and Conceal and Define compared to the Nyx HD concealer wand

Makeup Revolution is well known for duping high-end products, but in this case there don't seem to be many similarities between the two concealers. At first glance, the only thing similar with these concealers is that they both have big doe-foot applicators and wide tubes. The Tarte concealer has a purple and gold lid and the MUR one is plain rose gold. I personally like the look of both of the concealers, although I would have preferred a smaller applicator on both!

The Shape Tape concealer retails for $27 and the MUR concealer is only $7, but you get much more product in the Shape Tape. The Tarte concealer has the massive amount of 10 ml while the Conceal and Define has 3.4 ml. Even though you get less product, the Makeup Revolution concealer is still a better value at 0.48 ml per dollar compared to Tarte's 0.37 ml per dollar. If you want to only purchase one concealer and have it last you for a long time, the Tarte one might be a better option for you, but if you are looking for the best value then it's Makeup Revolution all the way.

When it comes to shade range, the drugstore option also comes out on top, which I'm glad to see! Tarte has 14 shades to choose from while Makeup Revolution released 18. I have the shade C2 from MUR, which is for fair skin with yellow undertones, and it's a great match for me. I have Fair Neutral in the Shape Tape formula which is a bit too light, but still usable.

Shape Tape unblended, Shape Tape blended, Conceal and Define unblended, Conceal and Define blended

Now on to the formula of these two concealers! A product can't be considered a dupe unless it performs the same, after all, and in my experience I don't think that these products are very similar. The Shape Tape concealer has more coverage, but is also harder to blend and looks heavier on my dry skin. The Makeup Revolution concealer is much creamier and looks more natural, though it doesn't cover as well as the Tarte concealer. I think that the Makeup Revolution concealer is more comparable to the NARS Radiant Creamy or the Maybelline Fit Me.

I set both of these concealers with a powder (the RCMA No Color powder) to ensure that they last all day, and I don't notice any creasing on my undereyes. Keep in mind that creasing isn't a major problem for me yet, so I can't guarantee you won't struggle with creases with either of these concealers. We're all different and prefer different things!

I don't think that the Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define is a dupe for the Tarte Shape Tape, but in my opinion, it's even better. For my needs, it is the perfect concealer. It covers well, doesn't make my undereyes look dry, and it's easy to blend and apply. The Shape Tape is more high-maintenance and though it does have excellent coverage, I think it is too dry and hard to blend.

If you are looking for a concealer that won't budge and covers the darkest of dark circles, the Shape Tape might still be the best option for you, but if you prefer something lighter and more radiant-looking, Conceal and Define is an exciting new product to check out! Both are great concealers, but my new favorite is from Makeup Revolution.

Have you tried either of these products?

In early February I finally celebrated my 21st birthday! As I'm sure many of you know, here in the US 21 is a very important birthday and I had been looking forward to it for a while.

I turned 21 at midnight on a Saturday night so I had a really fun weekend! It was also the weekend of the annual snowmobile race that is held in my area, so every bar and club in town was packed. I went out with a few of my friends and we had a lot of fun dancing all night. I took plenty of advantage of the free drinks everyone kept offering me! Luckily, I stopped drinking after a while so I didn't have a hangover the next day. I also didn't cry, throw up, or fight anyone so I'm very impressed with myself.

Anyway, I mostly received alcohol for my birthday from other people (thanks, Mom!) but I also treated myself to a few makeup goodies. Not a ton, as I'm still trying to control my spending, but some things that I had been wanting for a while. I had to take advantage of a free birthday gift from Sephora, right? I also had a gift card from Christmas I wanted to use on something special.

There were three birthday gift options from Sephora this year, and as usual I went for the makeup gift: a lip set from Bite Beauty. I love Bite products so I was happy to get a mini Amuse Bouche lipstick in Chai, a Matte Creme lip crayon in Glace, and a duo sample of the Agave lip balm and Agave Sugar lip scrub. The two lip shades are neutral and beautiful, and I'm excited to try the lip balm after I've heard so much hype about it.

I also picked up a 10 ml bottle of the Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Blackberry perfume. It smells good, I definitely pick up the blackberry notes, but I don't think it's a scent that is worth so much money.

My last Sephora "purchase" was a 100 point perk, a 3 g sample of the Laneige Lip Sleeping mask. This is a great sample size and I've been wanting to try this lip balm for ages! If it works well I will happily spend $20 on a giant pot of the mask.

My main birthday gift to myself was something that has been on my radar for a while--the Chantecaille Philanthropy blushes. I didn't know Chantecaille was a cruelty-free brand, but I'm happy that there is another luxury brand that doesn't test on animals! Even better, this line of blushes goes to benefit animal sanctuaries. Depending on which shade of blush you chose, and which animal was imprinted on that blush, that is where a percentage of the sale goes to.

I was drawn to so many of these blushes, especially the bee, butterfly, and sea turtle ones, but I ended up going with the shade "Laughter" which had coral embossed on it. The blush is absolutely stunning and the formula seems good, but I was surprised at how small this blush is. It is only 2.5 grams. It takes me a long time to finish up a blush, but for a luxury price tag I expect more product. Still, I will happily try out this blush and see whether it is worth the high price! It definitely is a beautiful addition to my collection. The shade will be better for spring and summer, but I want to test it out ASAP.

Swatches from left to right: Chai, Glace, Laughter

That's what I got for myself for my birthday! Are you excited about the Sephora birthday gift options this year?

Some products are easy to do first impressions on. Is a blush a pretty color with a great formula? Sounds good! Does a lipstick last though a slice of pizza? Fantastic!

Other products take several trials to get a good impression of. I'm talking skincare, foundation, and anything with results that claim to last for days or weeks. I've recently been trying out a lot of these products and I'm preparing a dedicated review on them, so I thought I would write about my thoughts so far and all of the interesting products that I'm testing at the moment!

Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define concealer
This concealer has recently been taking the beauty world by storm as a possible dupe for the Tarte Shape Tape. I have the famous concealer from Tarte so I am currently trying and comparing the Makeup Revolution concealer to the Tarte one to see which is better and whether or not it is a dupe. So far, I don't think that they are, but in a good way! I'm really loving the Makeup Revolution one and I just want to give it a few more uses before I do a final comparison.

Klair's Rich Moist Soothing Serum*
I recently became a Wishtrend affiliate and I was sent this serum to try out and potentially recommend. I've been using it daily along with my Hyaleuronic Acid serum from the Ordinary and so far I like it, but I don't think it's a must-have in my skincare routine yet. It does smell really nice, though! I would like to do an updated skincare routine soon and by that time I will have used this serum for several weeks and will have my full thoughts on it.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask
My lips have been so dry lately and I always hear great things about this lip treatment, so when I saw it offered as a 100 point perk at Sephora I was eager to try it out. I only used it once and it felt very intensely hydrating, but I want to use it a lot more before it has my stamp of approval.

No. 7 Stay Perfect foundation
I bought this a few weeks ago and I've only used it twice. Twice! I was so excited to try it out but it somehow got pushed to the back of my drawer. Upon getting it home, I think this shade is slightly too dark for me so the first time I used it I was not very happy with how it looked in comparison to my neck and chest. From here on out, I'm using a white mixer so I'll be able to focus on the formula and not the shade!

Remay Shave Gel Bar*
Does anyone else really struggle with razor burn? Even when I use a brand new razor, I get a ton of little red bumps! I'm hoping that this gel bar I was just sent will do the trick. It has a really interesting waxy texture that is hard to describe. I haven't used it yet, but I will use it for at least two weeks before doing my review on it. In the meantime, if you have any tips for razor burn I would love to hear them!

Pixi Glow Tonic
Everyone and their mother loves this toner. I finally finished all of my samples of other toners so I can break this out and see how it works for me! It's a glycolic acid toner which is meant to promote brightness. I have very high expectations for this toner so I hope it doesn't disappoint. I'll probably post about this in the current skincare post I mentioned earlier.

And those are all of the products I need to test out and review! I also wanted to say sorry that my upload schedule is so off--my classes and work schedule this semester don't correlate well with the sunlight, so I never seem to have good light for photos. It was also my birthday last weekend so I was out celebrating!

Have you tried any of these products? What did you think of them?

I'm a simple girl. I like makeup and I like saving money. So whenever Ulta has a 20% off sale, I'm quick to jump on board, even if I don't really need anything (which, let's be honest, probably doesn't save me money in the long run). The way I see it, I'm going to eventually buy an item on my wishlist for the full price, so why not buy it a little earlier than I need it and get it at a discount? Yeah, I'm really good at talking myself into buying makeup.

There were three items that I most wanted to get, and two of them kept going out of stock, so I'm really happy with my haul and all of the things that I got! I also stocked up on drugstore mascaras and hopefully one of them will be my new holy grail.

Ulta Legendary Lengths Mascara
Hourglass-shaped mascaras, such as the Too Faced Better Than Sex, Ciate Wonderwand, and the L'Oreal Lash Paradise, always work out well for me, so I'm hoping this Ulta-brand one does the same! It has shorter, plastic bristles that aren't very similar to other hourglass-shaped mascaras. It's a little more expensive than other drugstore mascaras, but still half the price of high-end ones.

Essence Lash Princess Volume Mascara
The Lash Princess False Lash Effect mascara is really good, so I wanted to try out the original Lash Princess, too. This wand is a really interesting shape and I can't wait to try it out!

Essence Volume Stylist 18 hr Curl and Hold mascara
Essence was having a buy-one-get-one half off offer so I added yet another mascara to my cart. Tati (GlamLifeGuru on YouTube) has been raving about an Essence mascara lately, but I think that I got the wrong one. The one she shows has the same shape, but is purple. Nevertheless, this one looks nice and it was only a couple of dollars.

Not Your Mother's Blue Sea Kale & Pure Coconut Water Shampoo
I recently bought a different shampoo and conditioner duo from Not Your Mother's, and while I like the conditioner, the shampoo is a little too hydrating for my scalp. Usually I can wash my hair every other day with no problem, but my hair was getting too oily too quickly! This shampoo is also hydrating, but is supposed to be less moisturizing than the one I'm having trouble with. I'll try to mix them and see if I can get it to work.

Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define Full Coverage Concealer
This is one of the products I really wanted to get as it's supposed to be a good dupe for the Tarte Shape Tape! My shade kept going out of stock, so I'm glad I got it. The doe-foot applicator is massive, just like the Shape Tape, but it doesn't seem as high coverage. This shade, C2, looks like a perfect match for my skin tone and the texture/coverage seems more comparable to the Nars Radiant Creamy concealer, which was one of my favorites. Let me know if you would like a full comparison to the Shape Tape concealer after I've tested the MUR one!

Hey Honey Don't Miss a Spot Fresh Honey Cleansing Foam
Thanks to Ipsy, I've tried a few products from Hey Honey that I really enjoyed, especially their moisturizer. My Biore cleanser is on it's last legs so I really needed a new one. I've never used a foam cleanser before but I hope it will be less stripping than the Biore one I've been using! This cleanser claims that it "gently cleanses and balances skin" and that it is for all skin types, so I hope it suits my skin well in winter and summer.

Pacifica Bali Coconut Lip Balm
Ulta shipping costs about five dollars where I live, and I needed to spend five more dollars to get free shipping, so I figured I would rather spend the money on a product I might use rather than letting the same amount go to waste on shipping. I like coconut lip balms and I haven't tried Pacifica's line, so this was the five dollar product I chose. The coconut scent isn't too strong, but it still smells nice and I'll happily try this out.

This haul seems really promising and I'm hoping for some great products, if not new staples, from what I bought! Have you bought any makeup recently?

I have two main goals with my makeup collection this year: use up my products, and spend less on new ones. This may seem simple, but for a makeup hoarder like myself, it definitely isn't.

I think I did really well this month and I finished up both a lot of products and a lot of expensive products, so I am on track to reach my goal which I will talk more about after getting through all of these empties!

Lush Shower Cream in The Comforter | $9.95
I bought this over the summer in my first Lush haul. The description--berries and bergamot--sounded like something I would love, but I really disliked this scent. It lathers nicely and is a pretty, bright pink color, but I had to mix it with other body washes because I hated the scent so much. I definitely wouldn't repurchase this, but I have already bought other Shower Creams from Lush that I like so much more! Replaced with the Lush Shower Cream in Bubbly.

Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Moisturizing Shampoo | $5.99
I'm still on the hunt for a great cruelty-free shampoo and conditioner. This one wasn't bad, but I went through it really quickly. I would prefer something that lasts longer. I replaced it with a larger product from Not Your Mother's, the Coconut Milk and African Marula Tree Oil shampoo. So far I prefer the Beach Babe shampoo!

Living Proof Restore Conditioner | $28.00
Again, I didn't mind this conditioner but I don't think it did anything great for my hair. It lasted longer than the Not Your Mother's shampoo, but I didn't want to repurchase it because it's so expensive and didn't work well for me. I am considering trying another Living Proof conditioner, but for now I replaced it with the Not Your Mother's Coconut Milk and African Marula Tree Oil conditioner!

Elizabeth Arden Hydra-Splash Alcohol-Free Toner for Normal/Dry Skin (not CF) | $7.99
I couldn't find this anywhere online, but I purchased it from TJ Maxx for $7.99. I liked it while I used it, it didn't leave my skin feeling dried out, but I wanted to try some other toners that I bought recently so I replaced it with a sample of the Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid toner.

Glamglow Youthmud Tingeexfoliate Treatment (not CF) | $69.00
I don't think that this mask was $69 dollars when I purchased it, but that is the retail value of it! I've had it for at least a year and just recently started using it again. It had dried up, but a bit of water revived it. The mask is a clay one that has all sorts of little chunks of leaves in it. It's quite strange. I liked that you could see the oil being pulled out of your pores on your nose, but it dried my skin out and is not worth the money in my opinion. I wouldn't repurchase even if Glamglow was cruelty-free.

MAC Strobe Cream 6 ml sample (not CF) | estimated $3.96
I have a bunch of these samples lying around and this is the first one that I finished! I like to mix it into a matte foundation for a healthy glow, but you can also use it as a very subtle cream highlight or a primer before your makeup. At one point in time, I'm sure this was a unique product, but now I don't feel like I need it as there are so many liquid highlighters on the market.

Purlisse BB Cream 10 ml sample | $10.00
Ipsy sent me this in a bag several months ago and I fell in love with this BB Cream! It matches me really well and has surprisingly good coverage. I love how healthy it makes my skin look. I'm considering purchasing the full size, although I might go for another travel size so that I can take it to Mexico with me.

Stila Huge Extreme Lash mascara sample | estimated $10.00
I've gone through a few samples of this and I remember loving it the first time, but with this sample it dried out really quickly and started to get clumpy on my lashes. It has the hourglass shape that I love in a mascara, but I don't think I'll repurchase this at the moment.

Victoria's Secret Glossy lip oil | $6.00
Does anyone else remember these roll-on lip gloss applicators? I loved them when I was little! When I saw it standing in line at Victoria's Secret I had to try one. I liked the lip oil at first, it felt very light and had a vanilla scent, but it's gotten hard to use now. Not a lot of product comes out so I decided to toss it.

Bath and Body Works Orange lip gloss | $7.50
I have fond memories of this lip gloss, too. My aunt used to get me these every year for Christmas. I find them moisturizing and they always smell great, but this one has gotten too old for me to use. I couldn't find this exact scent online but Bath and Body still carries some lip glosses, so I linked those instead!

Loofah | $1.00
Honestly, I can go months and months using the same loofah and not think twice about it. They never seem to rip on me or stretch out. I got a new loofah for Christmas and figured it was time to replace my old one!

If you didn't read my last empties post, I've decided to set a goal for myself: to use up a certain dollar amount of makeup by the end of 2018. In my last post I set a goal of $500, but based on this month's useage, I think I might be able to double that by the end of the year. So my new goal is to use up $1000 worth of product in my empties!

Another goal is to spend less on makeup than what I'm able to use up each month. Once I finished the Glamglow mask, I knew I had at least $50 to spend this month so I had one little Ulta haul, but other than that I am well within my goal, meaning I spent less than $159 on makeup this month. Truthfully, I'm saving up my money so that I can buy the Nabla Dreamy palette when it comes back in stock...but it sure is good for this project and for my bank balance!

Total amount used up this month: $159.39
Amount left to use to reach $1000 goal: $840.61

Have you finished any products recently?

At the end of December, I did a 2017 favorites post instead of a monthly favorites. I didn't have a ton of favorites from December, anyway, but there were a few notable ones so I decided to add them to my January favorites instead!

Glossier Priming Moisturizer
When my skin is dry in winter, I prefer hydrating primers to ensure that my makeup doesn't cling to any dry patches that I get. This is the best hydrating primer that I have ever found! It's a light moisturizer that sinks in quickly and leaves my skin smooth and hydrated. Other primers that give glowiness seem to have a lot of shimmer or a metallic finish to them, but this makes my skin look naturally luminous.

Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair! Mask*
The past few months I have been on a hunt for the perfect shampoo/conditioner duo. Some are too light for my dry hair, others don't cleanse thoroughly enough...basically, if you have any suggestions, I would love to have them! One product that has not let me down at all is this Briogeo mask. I received it from Influenster in exchange for an honest review and I've loved having the full size to use. I use it once a week and I notice a difference in the softness of my hair for days afterward. When my current shampoo and conditioner run out, I might switch my entire haircare routine to Briogeo. My wallet won't like it, but I think that my hair will.

Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb
Lipgloss is making a serious comeback, and I couldn't be happier! When Rihanna launched her brand with Kendo, I really wanted to support her but none of her products seemed right for me. This gloss, however, is a universally flattering shade that I really love. On some people it looks more pink, but it's definitely a neutral shade on me. I love the scent and this gloss doesn't feel sticky at all!

Harry Potter
I know, I know...I include Harry Potter in my favorites list a lot. Usually I'm talking about the books, and this time I'm referring to the movies. Believe it or not, I actually haven't seen the movies very often. I only saw the Half-Blood Prince in theaters, and I hadn't seen it since! Luckily I found the final three movies in a sale on Black Friday and I completed my collection, and then over winter break my sister and I marathoned them all. I interupted every few minutes to add that "in the books they actually..." because I am that sort of person. My sister yelled "Expecto Patronum" at me every day for at least a week after we finished Prisoner of Azkaban.

I had a few other TV and movie favorites from the past few months, but I included most of them in my Netflix recommendations post!

It
I saw the It remake in theaters a few months ago and was really impressed with the quality of this horror. I didn't find Pennywise the clown very scary, but the bullies and parents in the movie were genuinely creepy. It was also much funnier than I expected, sometimes in a juvenile way, but overall I loved the movie and I bought it when it came out on DVD. After a rewatch, I think It definitely deserves another spot on my favorites list!

The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater
Last week I got the urge to reread my all-time favorite series, so guess how I spent my weekend? It's difficult to explain what this series is about, especially because the official synopsis focuses on such a small aspect of it. Officially, the series is about a girl named Blue who is cursed to kill her true love when she kisses him. Unofficially, it is about a group of friends who are searching for a mythical king buried in Virginia. The characters, their arcs, the built-up romance, the beautiful descriptive writing stile...it's a 9.9/10 for me.

HQ
This is a really cool app that a friend of mine showed me, which is basically a live trivia game...on your phone! There are usually "shows" twice a day and you answer questions for the chance to win money. If you answer all twelve questions correctly, you win the grand prize, which is usually $2000, or you have to split the prize with other people who answer all of the questions correctly. So far I haven't gone past the sixth question, but I'll keep trying and have fun doing it!

What have you been loving in January?

I apologize in advance for my eclectic posting schedule this semester! I'm currently working two jobs while juggling my school schedule and my internship. It's also the dead of winter here in Michigan, so I have long days along with some of the worst weather in the country. To cope with it I have my winter makeup routine, which is very heavy on the hydration!

Glossier Priming Moisturizer
I start off with this lovely, light moisturizer as a base. It can be used as a primer or a daytime moisturizer, so it cuts my routine by a few minutes and primes my dry skin for foundation. It absorbs quickly and it doesn't have any scent!

Elf Flawless Finish Foundation
This affordable foundation has been beating out all of my high-end picks this winter! If you like a luminous, medium-coverage finish this will be perfect for you. It is buildable, which I love, and it lasts all day unless you touch your face often, or blow your nose, which I've unfortunately been doing a lot lately! Other than the awful shade range, there is nothing I dislike about this foundation. If you can make one work for you, I highly recommend it.

Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer
If you want natural coverage in a concealer, this one from Urban Decay might fit your needs. It's not as full coverage as the Tarte Shape Tape, but it's so much easier to blend and in my opinion it melds into other makeup in a more natural way.

RCMA No Color powder
To keep my T-zone matte and help make my makeup last all day, I set it with this loose powder. I am very fair so I can't tell if this leaves a white cast or not. I don't think that it does, but if you have a medium or deep skin tone you may not want to take my word for it! It doesn't give any flashback and it sets my makeup without looking cakey or powdery.

Anastasia Fawn Contour powder
Since adding this to my Project Pan for 2018, I've been using it a lot more often. It's a lighter shade than I usually use to contour, which works well for my winter-pale skin. It's not too pigmented, either, which makes it look more natural and makes it easier to blend. The refill pan is convenient so that I can buy only the shades I know I want to use, whereas with a full contour kit at least half of the shades will go untouched.

Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil
Usually when I use a bronzer I go for something like the Physician's Formula Butter bronzer or the Becca Capri Coast, but those both have a bit of a sheen/shimmer to them and in winter I like to go for something more matte. Too Faced has three different shades of their matte chocolate bronzers, and the lightest one works well for me. The scent of cocoa in the morning is also lovely!

Essence Satin Touch Blush in Satin Love
Again, sticking with the matte trend, I've been loving this soft, affordable blush from Essence. The shade is neutral and perfect for winter.

Colourpop Lunch Money
Now to add a bit of a glow, I reach for Lunch Money: a pale gold that melts beautifully into the skin and can give either a natural radiance or a beaming highlight. The Colourpop formula is similar to their eyeshadows as it is a creamy mousse texture. I like to apply it with my fingers to all the high points of my face.

Tartelette in Bloom palette
A simple palette with warm tones, cool tones, mattes, and shimmers? Look no further! Though it is definitely a basic palette, it has everything that I need and the formula is great. At the moment I'm loving the cool tones in this palette!

Nyx Epic Ink Liner
I talk about this eyeliner all the time and for good reason! The brush-tip applicator glides across the lid effortlessly. I've been using the same liner for months and it hasn't dried up on me! It's so annoying when you are trying to do a wing and a liner dries up when you get to the second eye. Even some of my high-end liners do that to me, but this Nyx one doesn't.

Ciate Wonderwand
I still haven't found my holy-grail mascara, which needs to be affordable, lengthening, volumizing, and easy to use, but the Ciate Wonderwand ticks every box except the price. I'm still using a sample I got a few months ago and I love it so much I'm considering purchasing the full size. It has an hourglass-shaped applicator so it gives lots of volume but no clumps.

Urban Decay Comfort Matte Vice lipstick in Hitch Hike
Is there anything better than a red lipstick in winter? Most of my daily activities like work and school don't call for a red lip, so instead I've been going for this muted terra-cotta shade which is absolutely gorgeous. It's not quite a nude, but it's not bold, either. I think it would look gorgeous on most skin tones and the comfort matte formula is just that: comfortable!

I am a big fan of all sorts of TV and movies, so over winter break I binge-watched so much on Netflix! I like a lot of the popular shows, like the Office, Friends, and American Horror Story, but I wanted to post some of my favorite series on Netflix that I don't hear very much about. I also included one movie that blew me away recently!

Bill Nye Saves the World
If you went to a school in America, chances are you watched some Bill Nye the Science Guy. I have fond memories of the scientist and I think it's so cool that he got a Netflix series to target the young adults who grew up watching him. In each episode Bill Nye (who is a real scientist, by the way) discusses a different, often controversial topic such as climate change or alternative medicine. He hosts a panel of experts on the subject and often does live experiments to explain why scientists agree/disagree with common beliefs or opinions. It's informative and easy to watch!

Bates Motel
When I first tried to watch this series it confused me. I'd heard it was a prequel to Psycho, the famous horror film, but then the series was set in the present day and it didn't make sense. Once I got past that, however, the series is really well done and intriguing. It follows Norman Bates as a teenager when his possessive and down-on-her-luck mother buys a motel in a new town. I haven't finished the series, but so far it's amazing.

Black Mirror
This one has been getting a lot of hype recently and I'm so here for it, because it deserves it! Black Mirror is an anthology series (similar to the Twilight Zone) in which each episode has different characters and a different plot/theme. Most of them center around technology and the potential it has to change the world--often for the worst. I recommend skipping the first episode (trust me, it's quite shocking for most people!) and watching one of the lighter episodes first, like Nosedive, San Junipero, or Hang the DJ. The fourth season was recently uploaded and I loved it! Black Museum was my favorite episode from the new season.

Gotham
Gotham is a prequel to Batman, but here me out: I've never seen a single Batman movie but I like this show a lot! It follows the detective James Gordon, who is played by the actor who portrayed Ryan in The O.C., and his work in Gotham City before Batman becomes Batman. I think it's interesting because it shows the origins of a lot of the famous characters from Batman, like the Penguin and Catwoman. This is another one that I haven't finished but I love what I've seen of it!

Hemlock Grove
If you're a fan of supernatural shows, like the Vampire Diaries or Teen Wolf, you may want to check out this Netflix original. It has a great cast, including Bill Skarsgard from It (2017), and begins after a girl is murdered in a small town. It's an adult take on the supernatural genre and it's very cool.

Berlin Syndrome
Finally, this last recommendation is a movie that I watched over winter break. Berlin Syndrome is based off of a book of the same name, which I haven't picked up yet, in which a tourist in Berlin has a one-night stand which results in her getting trapped in a man's apartment. The name comes from 'Stockholm Syndrome', in which a captive starts to trust and become attached to their captor, so you can guess where the plot goes. I love Teresa Palmer and I thought this movie was so good, I've been telling everyone about it.

I'm always looking for more recommendations, so leave them below if you have any! Do you like any of these shows?

One aspect of makeup that many disagree on is whether drugstore products perform just as well as more expensive ones. Some say that price doesn't always matter, and others are more likely to trust higher-end products.

I'm on the fence about the issue. Usually I find that higher-end products perform better, but I also have plenty of drugstore favorites that compete with the other products in my collection.

For this series I wanted to compare top of the line, pricey products with the least expensive products that I own. There is a huge price difference between my most expensive blush and my least expensive, but is there just as big of a difference in terms of quality?

My most expensive blush is the beautiful Hourglass Ambient Lighting blush in the shade Mood Exposure, which costs $38. It's a mauvey, plum-toned blush with a beautiful sheen to it. The packaging is luxe and heavy, the product applies like a dream, and all in all I think this is one expensive product that is worth the money. The Ambient Lighting blushes come in a variety of shades. If they all perform the way Mood Exposure does, then they are a safe bet!

The Hourglass formula is baked, very soft, and pigmented. It blends out well but you can go overboard with them. I have found that the color lasts all night and doesn't emphasize texture or dryness. If you're willing to spend the money, I don't think you'll be disappointed with the blush, however there are cheaper options available. The Milani baked blushes, for example, are a good alternative!

As for my cheapest blush, that would be the Essence Satin Touch. The shade range is very limited. At the moment there are only two shades. I only have one of them, Satin Love, which is a neutral matte pink. It would work for most light and medium skin tones, but Satin Coral might be a better option. I hope that Essence expands this shade range because it truly is a nice formula!

Mood Exposure, Satin Love

The Satin Touch blushes don't compare to my Hourglass one, but it is very soft and a great value at only around $3--$35 less than the Hourglass Ambient Lighting blushes. You don't get as much product as the Hourglass ones, but it takes so long to finish a blush that trust me, it's not a big issue. The blush is soft, not too powdery, and blends nicely. Like the Hourglass one, you can go overboard with it. The finish is matte, but a very velvety, soft matte rather than a drying one. The packaging is cheap and plastic, easy to break, but even if you have to repurchase it a few times it doesn't reach the price of many high-end brands.

If you need a new blush, I think you would likely be happy with either of these blushes. The Hourglass one has a larger shade range and you get more product, but the Essence ones are so affordable that it would be worthwhile to check them out before immediately going for the Ambient Lighting line.

In this case, there is a difference between my most expensive and least expensive blushes but it isn't a major one! It really goes to show that there are some great affordable products out there to rival the higher end ones at a percentage of the cost.

What do you think of this series? Do you tend to go for high-end or drugstore blushes?
Has anyone else been watching the videos on YouTube in which people mix all of their products together? No, it's just me?

I've seen this done with foundations, eyeshadows, liquid lipsticks, highlighters, etc. and the idea is that if you combine all of your products you will get something with the perfect shade, coverage, and consistency for your personal tastes. I believe the idea came from Safiya Nygaard's videos so all credit to her for this post!

I decided to mix together all of my foundations because it seems like everyday I already mix my foundations. If I'm trying to get use out of a matte foundation, I like to mix in a bit of a dewy foundation, if I have a darker foundation I mix in a white lightener, etc. I'm really curious what the outcome would be if I mix together all of my foundations, whether they are light or dark, dewy or matte, neutral or yellow-toned.

All of the foundations that I own are:

Elf Flawless Finish
Touch in Sol Advanced Real Moisture
The Ordinary Coverage
The Ordinary Serum
Too Faced Born This Way
Wet n Wild Photofocus (in two shades)
Tarte Rainforest of the Sea
Purlisse BB Cream
LA Girl Pro Coverage
No. 7 Match Made
L'Oreal Pro Glow
LA Girl Pro Coverage white mixer

I added all of these foundations to an empty case that I have and mixed them together with some tweezers.

I added: 7 neutral foundations, four with a yellow undertone, one with a pink undertone, and one white mixer.

3 had a light coverage, 7 had medium coverage, and three had a high coverage.

5 had a dewy/luminous finish, 4 had a satin finish, and 4 had a matte finish.

Overall, I was expecting a foundation with a neutral undertone, a medium coverage, and a satin finish, and that is almost exactly what I got.

The mixed foundation was almost a perfect match for my skin. It is a hair too dark, but at the moment I am the palest I ever get so I expect to be too light for most of my foundations. It was more yellow-toned than neutral, which is fine as I have a yellow undertone anyway. It had a medium coverage but I used a lot more foundation than I usually would to get medium coverage. I think it had more of a luminous finish than a satin or matte one. Overall, I like the mixed foundation a lot but I hate the scent. You would think combining all of my foundations would weaken the scent of the Wet n' Wild Photofocus, but sadly my mixed foundation still smells like paint.

I probably only have one or two uses left of my mixed foundation but I will definitely use it up! It was a fun experiment but I don't think I would do it again. If I want a foundation with a medium coverage that matches me I can reach for one of the 7 in my collection that does the same thing.

What do you think of this experiment? Have you heard of it before this post?
