Younique Moodstruck Mascara and Lip Gloss Review

A few weeks ago I was contacted by Younique and asked if I wanted to try out their Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes mascara. I had seen a review on The New Old Fashioned Girl's blog that showed very impressive results, and I'd always been curious about fiber mascaras, so I was eager to try it out for myself!

Younique was also kind enough to send me one of their Lucrative lip glosses, so I will include that in this review as well!

The Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes mascara* comes in a little kit containing two matte black mascara tubes and an instruction booklet. Both tubes are labeled and one is larger than the other, so it's easy to not mix them up when they're both sitting on your dresser or in a drawer. The bigger tube is the Transplanting gel and the second contains the 3D Fibers.

                                                                         Transplanting Gel
                                                                    3D Fibers

After reading the instructions and knowing the general idea from Anna's review, the application process was fairly easy. You coat your lashes with the Transplanting gel and then before it dries, you brush the fibers through the lashes. Finally you apply another layer of the Transplanting gel to seal it and comb out some of the fibers. If desired, you can repeat the process and add another layer of fibers but I haven't tested this out as one application of the duo is enough for me!

I wish the Transplanting Gel had a nicer brush on it. The one included is very long and it's not my favorite shape for reaching all of the lashes or plumping them up. Granted, it's not meant to volumize or lengthen necessarily (that's what the fibers are for) but I think it would help the overall effect. Plus, you could use it as a mascara on the lower lashes! I like the fiber brush the way it is, the fibers spread onto the lashes quickly and easily with just a few strokes of the brush. I'm curious about whether you could use the fibers with a regular mascara. Perhaps when the Transplanting Gel tube is finished I will try it out!

I do like to comb out my lashes with a spoolie after the second coat of Transplanting Gel has dried, I like completely clump-free lashes and the fibers can make some of them stick together. I also usually notice some fallout of fibers underneath the eyes, but it's easy to sweep away because they don't stick to your face the way that eyeshadow fallout does.

I definitely notice a lot of volume with this mascara, and some length. I've used mascaras that provide more length than this, but it's got to be one of the most volumizing I've tried. What I like about the Moodstruck mascara is that it almost makes it look like you have more lashes than you actually have, the fibers give it that appearance. It also doesn't weigh down the eyes the way I had expected.

Side note: is anyone good at taking photos of their eyes??

Top row: curled lashes, no mascara. Middle row: one layer of Transplanting Gel and Fibers. Bottom row: after second Transplanting Gel coat has been applied.

One of my bigger issues with this mascara is that it gives a ton of oomph on the top lashes, but I find it hard to use the fibers on the bottom ones. To fix this I go in with another mascara in that section. I think you could also use the Transplanting Gel, but it doesn't work as well as a traditional mascara so I'd rather use one of my favorite drugstore picks for that purpose.

If you regularly use two or more coats of mascara, I don't think this would add any time or fuss to your makeup routine. For a one-coater like me, I save this for days when I have plenty of time to get ready or if I'm just looking for something extra on the eyes. I really like it overall, the process is much easier than I expected and the results are so worth it. I haven't noticed it flake or smudge throughout the day!

As for the Lucrative Moodstruck Minerals lipgloss*, I received the shade Luxe which is a nude, pinky beige shade. The color itself is pretty but easily duped. I really like the formula; it isn't sticky at all, it has no scent and it's nicely pigmented and shiny. The packaging looks expensive and it has a little mirror on the side for on the go application. It also feels hydrating, perfect for winter!

The mascara duo costs $29 and the lipgloss is $15. I'm not sure the mascara is worth nearly $30, it performs as well or better than other high-end mascaras that I've tried but I personally don't like to spend more than ten or fifteen dollars on a product like mascara that doesn't last very long. If you regularly buy high end mascaras, you may like this a lot, especially if you have sparse lashes! I think the lip gloss is a fair price, it's nicely pigmented and I would consider getting another shade.

Have you ever tried a fiber mascara? Do you think this one makes a big difference?
Xx Katie

  5. I'm not the biggest fan of fibre mascaras and the fibres usually end up in my eyes at the end of the day. I am also not the biggest fan of Younique in general because some of the sale reps can be so freaking annoying. Yes, I understand that they are doing their job but the way they spam all over FB leave a bitter taste in my mouth. I also think Younique is way overpriced for what they are.

    1. I didn't have that experience at all, although I'm rarely on Facebook so I wouldn't have seen any spamming ads! The girl I emailed with was so nice, probably one of my favorite PR experiences :) I do think the mascara is pricey though! For that money I could get a new palette or a luxury product.

  6. I love this mascara, but I agree about the price. The most I have ever spent on a mascara is $22 and I don't think I will be doing that again.

  7. I keep seeing Younique online but I haven't tried any. I am not a fan of fibre mascara as I know for sure that it will be all around the place when I apply them so instead of going through this mess, I prefer to apply 2-3 layers of mascara :)
