Maybelline Color Jolts vs. L'Oreal Infallible Paints

Over the summer I was obsessed with the Maybelline Color Jolt in Stripped Down. The rosy nude was one of my favorite shades and I loved the formula as well! Sadly, I was not a big fan of the applicator. L'Oreal recently launched their own glossy liquid lipstick with a similar shade called Nude Star and I immediately wanted to try it and compare it to my old favorite!

Packaging wise, these two lip products are very similar. They both are black and whatever color lipstick is in the tube. If you have multiple shades, this makes it very easy to find the one you're looking for. However, the L'Oreal tube is longer and the applicator is much different.

The Color Jolts have a felt-tip applicator similar to the Too Faced Melted lipsticks. They apply product evenly, but after a while of using it I feel unhygienic. In actuality it is probable no more unhygienic than a traditional lip gloss applicator, but the felt-tip looks very messy and it makes me paranoid. The Infallible lip paints, on the other hand, have a traditional doe foot applicator with a little dip in the middle that fits into the lip better and collects more product. I definitely prefer it to the felt-tip!

These both vary in price depending on where you're shopping. At Ulta, they're both $9.99, but at Target the Color Jolts are $6.99 and the Infallible Paints are $7.99. You get a little bit more product with L'Oreal, with 0.27 fluid ounces compared to Maybelline's 0.21 fluid ounces.

All of this is well and good, but how do these compare after they are applied?

Colorwise, I think Stripped Down is a little more muted and brown-toned than Nude Star. Neither of these dry down matte but Stripped Down can have more of a satin finish while Nude Star is glossy and more pigmented. Nude Star also applies more smoothly while the Color Jolts can be a little sticky at first. I think that these both last about the same amount of time, at most 4-5 hours on me (that's how long I usually go without eating haha!) Some light drinking or eating won't affect these much, and they both reapply nicely. The Infallible Paints are slightly more sticky on the lips than the Color Jolts, but neither bother me very much.

One major difference between these is the smell. I don't like the smell of L'Oreal's lip products, and the Infallible Paints scent is especially heavy. I can't describe it, they smell like a mixture of sweet chemicals and old lady floral perfume. It seems to linger and I can taste it if I eat or drink anything. The Color Jolts smell much better in my opinion! They have a nice watermelon scent that wears off quickly.

I think that the L'Oreal Infallible Paints have a really nice formula and applicator, better than the Color Jolts and they are a better value for money. Despite that, I will wear Stripped Down more. I like the slight differences in color and the smell doesn't bother me. If you are choosing between these two, try to swatch them in store and see if the scents bother you! If not, then I recommend the L'Oreal. If they do, the Color Jolts are almost as good!

You can shop the Color Jolts here and the Infallible lip paints here!

Have you tried either of these products? What do you think of them?

  2. Definitely want to check out L'Oreal then, but I do love the colour of Nude Star. I will have to see if the scent will bother me when I am in store as I might go for Maybelline, thanks for sharing. Great review and I love that you compared different brands as well, really helpful! Hope you are well, Katie xxx

  3. These both look great (and I think I'm gonna buy one) but the way you described the smell is just the best: mixture of sweet chemicals and old lady floral perfume - sounds so great haha

  8. They look so similar but I think I prefer Stripped Down since it a little more matte than the other one. Too bad abouf the smell of the Loreal one, I hate it when a lip product smells awful!
