All About Brows

My relationship with my eyebrows has been complicated for the past several years. My thick, dark, unruly brows require a lot of maintenance to keep them in an acceptable shape, let alone attempt the "Brow goals" looks that are so popular at the moment. Throughout the years I've developed a routine for grooming and filling in my eyebrows, but it's still something I'd like to improve on!

By far my biggest issue is shaping. I like having long, arched brows and if I had the funds to get them waxed every week, I would! I get very paranoid about them becoming uneven. If you've ever heard the phrase "your eyebrows are should be sisters, not twins"...mine seem more like first cousins. My dream eyebrows are Phoebe Tonkin's! I've actually taken her photo into my salon and been like, this is what I want.

I get them waxed every couple of months, usually before a big event or something like that when I want my eyebrows to look at their best. There are a few different people/places I've been to so I try to stick with someone I trust! In between waxes, I tweeze them myself and sometimes use an eyebrow razor. I've had both my tweezers and my razor for years so I no longer know what brand they are, unfortunately. I recently bought an electric eyebrow razor and I'm not a fan, so I'll stick to my old one for now!

Because the individual hairs of my eyebrows are so long, they tend to get out of place really easily. To fix this I use a spoolie and I brush my brow hair upward like this:

then take nail scissors and trim away the hairs that go above the eyebrow line.

Once they are shaped and trimmed, I usually leave them be. I have really dark brows, darker than my natural hair color although you can't tell in the photo, so filling them in seems a bit extra to me most of the time. Plus, I haven't found many products that match my color. They're either too light or too warm. Most days I put a clear gel on them to keep the hairs in place and call it good.

However, when I'm going out sometimes I like to fill them in. The best color match I've found is actually an eyeshadow from Maybelline's the Nudes palette (post).

This shadow is the only reason I'm keeping this palette, to be honest! Matte eyeshadows work fairly well as brow powders, at least for me anyway! I'm planning on either depotting this eyeshadow or buying a similar single shadow so this can stop taking up space in my eyeshadow drawer.

In the future I'd like to try more high-end brow products like some of the new releases from Benefit or the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz. The Soap and Glory archery pencil is also on my list, if I can find a good color match. I'd also like to try getting my eyebrows threaded as I've heard you get a much sharper, more precise line with threading as opposed to waxing.

What's your usual brow routine?

  1. I do exactly the same to trim my brows, but I use a blue mascara to hold them up and trim them - odd I know but works a wonder. Brow maintenance is ongoing for me, such a pain!

    1. Mascaras a great idea! I have a purple one I never use and a bunch of dried up ones, maybe I'll try that the next time I trim them x

  3. My brows are so fair, they require a lot of work - I'm dyeing them weekly and using a black NYX gel to fill them in at the moment but I'd love them to be naturally as dark as yours! x

  4. Ohh hun honestly, I was so glad to hear this post because our eyebrows are soooo similar! Mine are very dark, thick and unruly also, and honestly I hate doing anything to them! Seems that I can never get it right... I don't really fill them in much, I do quite like the Archery kit by Soap and Glory. :) It's super easy to use and quite quick, I deffo recommend it. x
